Valerian
(Valeriana javanica [BI.] DC.)



Tribe: Valerianaceae
Crude Name: Radix Valeriana (valerian root).

Description
Annual plants, height 60 cm. Stems erect, soft, smooth, pale green. compound leaf, leaf blade is elliptical, pointed tip and the base, surface wrinkled, green. Compound interest is out of the tip of the stem, bunch shape, petals pale green, white crown. Fruit oval, brown. Blackish round seeds.
The essential oil of valerian root is used for the manufacture of perfume, while the extract for flavoring in food industry.

Nature and Usefulness
Spicy, slightly bitter, cool. Nutritious tonic of the heart, tranquilizers, sleeping pills (mortgages), reliever seizures (spasmolitik), facilitator fart (carmintive), facilitator urine (diuretic), the facilitator sputum (expectorant), and lowering blood pressure (hypotensive).

Chemical content
Asiri oil (including isovalerianic acids, bornyl acetate, beta-caryphyllene), actinidine, bornyl isovalerate, caffeic acid, iridoids (valepotriates), and isovaltrate, didrovaltrate, valerone, valerenic acid, valerine, valerianina, and ionona.


Portion used

How to use
